As Facebook figurehead Mark Zuckerberg made the surprise announcement that the Facebook holding company will be going through a major rebrand and name change to become Meta, the social networking guru has his sights set on what he feels will be the next evolution of the internet: building a virtual utopia known as the Metaverse that promises the potential of a dynamic and enriched online world, designed for users to spend their entire digital lives within.
Facebook's renaming and restructuring is all about the idea of turning the metaverse into a (virtual) reality. A reality where users can “teleport instantly as a hologram to be at the office without a commute, at a concert with friends, or in your parents living room to catch up” in a virtual space where you can create and explore amongst your fellow users.
Whilst the names of their ever-popular apps and brands won’t be changing, they all share the same new vision – to bring the metaverse to life so that new newly rebranded company will become ‘metaverse-first’ rather than ‘Facebook-first’.
Will you be taking a trip into the Metaverse anytime soon?
